There’s no denying that the beauty industry has a sustainability issue. Take, for example, all the confetti stuffers commonly found in PR mailers. Yes, quite annoying.
Brands have progressed over the years as they’ve realized the need for environmental sustainability. More importantly, consumers tend to align themselves with brands that hold the same moral and ethical values as they do.
This, of course, has its own set of challenges: The industry has a huge supply chain. Many obstacles can cause a brand not to be sustainable.
According to SparkNews, those challenges include “sustainable sourcing of raw ingredients, energy consumption, waste management and carbon footprint of the whole production chain.” Additionally, there’s the “biodegradability and lack of human and environmental toxicity. Not to mention the corporate social responsibility in terms of inclusion, fairness and equal opportunities.”
Shoppers are more conscious now than ever of sustainable beauty brands that take a stand on the environment. A 2018 McKinsey & Business of Fashion study revealed that 66% of global millennials are willing to spend more on sustainable fashion brands – beauty is not far behind.
Thankfully, if you want to be more sustainable, there are many sustainable beauty brands that are starting one product at a time.
1. REN Skincare
REN Skincare offers naturally-derived clean solutions for proven results. From overnight recovery balms to dark circle eye creams and vitamin C gels, the brand has a multitude of products to buy.
2. BLK + GRN

The majority of Tata Harper Skincare’s packaging is made of glass. This was a decision the company made due to its recyclability and reuse options. The brand also uses 100% post-consumer materials as well as soy-based ink for printing.

The brand contributes 1% of its worldwide turnover to organizations helping to protect and help the environment. By 2021, the brand will have planted more than 8 million trees in 8 countries.
Ilia is a brand with ingredients and packaging centered around sustainability. With a focus on clean beauty, the brand explores this with “conscious, carefully-selected ingredients, and no compromises.” With sustainable packaging through the use of recycled aluminum, glass components and responsibly sourced paper, Ilia educates on the entire product life cycle, so items don’t end up in landfills.
8. Form Beauty
Form provides high-quality and enriching haircare products that are “thoroughly vetted to provide top performance without compromising,” according to its site.
PLANT Apothecary provides “certified organic, eco-friendly self care” through organic essential oils and botanical ingredients, according to its site. The brand is also good for the earth with sustainable packaging!
10. The Honey Pot
The Honey Pot is the “first complete feminine care system that cleanses, protects, and balances your vagina,” according to the site. Products include no chemicals, toxins, artificial fragrances or anything synthetic. All products are biodegradable and cruelty-free.
11. by Humankind
By Humankind focuses on reducing single-use plastics waste. Scientifically proven, the brand offers daily, dental and shower routine products.
