How to spot counterfeit products and fake reviews online

(KOIN) – As life transitions to pre-pandemic norms, the rise of online shopping will likely remain – and along with it, the number of counterfeit products and fake reviews to trick shoppers.

To counteract these attacks on consumers, the Oregon State Public Interest Research Group (OSPIRG) drew attention to the increase in pirated items and false reviews and released a list of tips on how to best spot the scams.

OSPIRG said knock-off products have crept into every sector of the economy — but many items online scammers are currently counterfeiting pose serious threats to public health.

“While counterfeiters used to focus on fake luxury items, such as purses or shoes, now, counterfeit products such as pharmaceuticals or batteries have become too common online,” the research group stated. “Unlike a knockoff accessory, these counterfeit products can threaten consumers’ health and safety, with some counterfeit pharmaceuticals containing incorrect amounts of active

Digital Economy Index series, noted that consumers shelled out $1.7 trillion online since the pandemic began, from March 2020 through February 2022, almost triple combined 2018 and 2019 online sales of $609 billion.

Adobe estimated 2021 U.S. online sales at $885 billion, up 9% from $813 billion in 2020, which in turn soared 41% from $575 billion in 2019. Adobe also found that prices rose for 21 consecutive months—as inflation grew more severe. In 2020, Adobe says, incremental online spending over 2019 totaled $237.9 billion, including $4.7 billion due to higher prices. Chili’s adds merchandise to new online shop

Fans can buy items such as button-down shirts, sticker packs or fanny packs, all styled in Chili’s fashion.

DALLAS — Fans of the Oldtimer or the Presidente Margarita from Chili’s Grill & Bar can now let people know by the clothes they wear.

American casual dining restaurant Chili’s has added restaurant merchandise to its first official online shop, welcometochilis.com. Fans can buy items such as button-down shirts, sticker packs or fanny packs, all styled in Chili’s fashion.

The initial run of products is already more than half gone with multiple items selling out within the first two hours, according to restaurant officials.

In 1975, Larry Lavine founded Chili’s in Texas. The first location was in the Vickery Meadows area of Dallas, Texas. The company is now owned and operated by Brinker International.

As of 2017, there were 1,606 total locations served worldwide.
