While the novel coronavirus was the talk of the town in Paris during the womenswear shows this time last year, nobody could have predicted that it would continue to define fashion’s seasonal calendar twelve months later.

Paris Fashion Week opens today with a schedule of mostly digital videos and livestreams in lieu of people-packed runway shows. It is the new normal for a world that has been turned on its head.

From manufacturing supply chains to sales, all aspects of the fashion industry’s modus operandi has been challenged due to health and safety concerns and travel restrictions.

One of the most tangible examples of the pandemic’s impact is the various fashion weeks that have been held virtually around the world, meaning the once closed-off, highly exclusive events in New York, London, Milan and Paris have had their doors flung open this year.

Hero Is a Virtual Shopping Platform That ‘Humanizes’ Online Shopping

Founded in 2015 by Adam Levene, the Hero platform allows shoppers to go “inside the store” online to “interact with real experts at their favorite brands through video shopping, messaging and real-time chat,” the company said.

Adam Levene: Shoppers don’t have the same confidence to buy online as they do when browsing in-store — we launched Hero in early 2017 to solve this, believing that human interaction is what’s missing from e-commerce.

Grapple, my last business, was the largest app-commerce company in Europe, launching digital platforms for Adidas, P&G and Fiat, among others.

New York Fashion Week Is Going Virtual, Here’s How to Tune In

The New York Fashion Week spring 2021 season is unlike any others due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With most shows and events going virtual, the general public now has more ways to participate than ever before.

Most designers are taking on hybrid formats for their fashion shows, including livestreams, look books, videos or other digital activations. Jason Wu and Rebecca Minkoff, for example, are hosting physical shows and events with a limited audience that will be simultaneously livestreamed.

In addition to fashion shows, the season will also include free events and programming that people can access digitally. For example, IMG is returning with its series of panels and events, this time with the Black in Fashion Council, The Wall Group and Proenza Schouler designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, among others.

What It’s Like to Do Makeup for a Virtual Fashion Show During the Pandemic

Before heading backstage for Fashion Week shows, I must take a deep breath and emotionally, mentally, and spiritually prepare myself for being a sardine. Usually, the models are set up at hair and makeup stations basically shoulder to shoulder in a small, narrow space. I have to squeeze through tight rows to get a peek at them. Everyone inevitably gets in the way of each other. Before the pandemic, the cramped chaos thrilled me. Now, just thinking about it makes me cringe. 

Slowly but surely, fashion shows are happening again. The Dior Cruise 2021 show, for instance, took place today, July 22. An audience wasn’t physically in attendance, but people watched through their screens as 47 models walked a runway set up in the Piazza del Duomo in Lecce, Italy.
